Watching the dolphin and whales are an
amazing experience. Whale and Dolphin watching season in the North western and
Southern coast of the country starts in November to April, out of which December, January and April are the peak months. The ideal locations
for whale watching would be Dondra Point (accessible from Galle, Hikkaduwa and
Mirissa) and Trincomalee while the sea off Kalpitiya teems with an abundance of
dolphins. During the peak these months the profitability of spotting sperm whales & blue whales are very high moreover the chances of spotting Spinner Dolphins off Dondra point are also high.

We arrived at the fishing port pier at Mirrisa very early in the morning and set out for our whale watching excursion. It took us about an hour to reach the viewing point. Many dolphins were seen but only isolated blue whales could be identified at a distance. We got on one of the boats with several others and headed out to sea. There are two vessels that make the four hour excursion, these vessels travel up to 15 nautical miles to obtain a closer view.
Soon we were surrounded by all the major whale safari boats .Yes I saw 3-4 blue whales and that was
amazing. They
were swimming right beside our ship, it was an amazing once in a life time experience when we spotted many whales; both blue and sperm whales. Here are some photographs
I capture while on tour.
